Celebrating Excellence: Aspen Films Partners with CCIB for Award-Winning Mini-Documentary

At Aspen Films, we pride ourselves on our ability to capture compelling stories through the lens of a camera. This year, we’re thrilled to continue our partnership with the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB) to produce a mini-documentary-style award video that celebrates the achievements of Mark Little from Jotson Inc., based in Calgary, Alberta.

Our team at Aspen Films handled all aspects of the production process, from pre-production and filming to post-production. This comprehensive approach ensures that we can deliver a high-quality, narrative-driven video that honours the outstanding contributions of Mark Little to his community and industry.

Pre-Production: Setting the Stage

The pre-production phase is crucial for laying the groundwork for a successful shoot. Our team begins by developing a detailed narrative structure that will guide the entire video. This involved extensive research into Mark Little’s background, his role at Jotson Inc., and his impact on the Calgary community. We aimed to create a story that not only highlights his professional achievements but also delves into his personal motivations and the values that drive his work.

Collaboration with CCIB was essential during this phase. Shannon Sutherland from CCIB worked closely with our team to ensure that the narrative aligns with the organization’s goals and vision. Her insights were invaluable in shaping the direction of the video and ensuring that it resonates with the intended audience.

Filming: Capturing the Story

The filming process is where the story truly comes to life. We planned a well-coordinated shoot spanning 1-1.5 days in Calgary, during which we captured multiple interviews and b-roll footage. Our goal was to create a visually engaging video that seamlessly weaves together these elements to tell a cohesive story.

Interviews: Voices of Impact

Interviews are a cornerstone of our mini-documentaries, providing authentic insights directly from the subjects. For this project, we conducted interviews with several key individuals, including:

  • Mark Little: The main focus of the video, Mark shared his personal journey, the challenges he has overcome, and his vision for the future of Jotson Inc. His insights form the backbone of the narrative, offering viewers a deep understanding of his character and achievements.
  • Sandra Sutter: As part of a separate CCIB award video, we also filmed an interview with Sandra Sutter in Calgary. Sandra’s interview was provided to another production company, showcasing our collaborative spirit and dedication to supporting CCIB’s broader initiatives.

Additionally, one interview for this video was filmed by a different company in Edmonton. Chief Boucher’s insights adds another layer of depth to the narrative, providing a broader perspective on the impact of Mark Little’s work.

B-Roll: Visual Storytelling

B-roll footage is essential for creating a visually rich and engaging video. During our time in Calgary, we captured a variety of b-roll shots that showcase Mark Little in his professional environment at Jotson Inc., interacting with his team, and engaging with the community. This footage was carefully selected to complement the interviews and enhance the overall narrative.

Post-Production: Crafting the Final Story

Once filming is complete, our team moves into the post-production phase, where the magic of storytelling truly happens. This phase involves several key steps:

  • Editing: Our skilled editors carefully review all the footage, selecting the best clips to create a cohesive and engaging narrative. This process involves cutting and arranging the interviews and b-roll to ensure a seamless flow.
  • Sound Design: Audio is a critical component of any video. We ensure that all interviews are clear and well-balanced, and will add appropriate background music and sound effects to enhance the emotional impact of the video.
  • Color Grading: To achieve a polished and professional look, we apply colour grading to all the footage. This process ensures that the video has a consistent visual style and that the colours are vibrant and appealing.
  • Final Review: Before delivering the final product, we conduct a thorough review to ensure that the video meets our high standards and aligns with CCIB’s vision. Shannon Sutherland from CCIB will be involved in this process, providing feedback and ensuring that the video accurately represents Mark Little’s story.
